December 7th is the anniversary of the very best friend that I knew in my 83 years…grew up with…served in the military with…laughed and prayed with…was fellow worker in two different companies. Jack was a deacon, one of the first in Detroit. The permanent deacon is not going on to the priesthood…he remains a deacon. Jack loved his dear wife and his children and my wife and me too. His favorite things were these two: to visit the jails and ask if an inmate wanted to talk to a Catholic deacon….and to preside over the wake service of any who asked, Catholic or no faith at all. His joy in giving was splendid. Jack, we remember your love and goodness. You certainly left behind a wonderful example of “I will go Lord…If You lead me…I will hold Your people in the palm of my hand.’ Sung at his ordination and at his funeral. Right now…he is probably saying ‘Wish he wouldn’t go on like that…I loved what I did…I did what I loved…that simple.”
