My children’s school is collecting money during lent to donate to a Haitian mission. Each grade in the school has a big jar in front of the office filled with coins and bills. My youngest child is in kindergarten. She has been collecting all the loose change (mostly pennies) around the house to put into her grade’s jar. She deposited her bag of change yesterday. When she came home she started asking more questions about why the school was collecting the money. I explained about those less fortunate in Haiti and touched on the horrible earthquake that they are still trying to recover from. She sat quietly at the table. After a few moments she got up and disappeared upstairs. When she came back down she had a five dollar bill in her hand. It was from her wallet and part of her birthday money she had recently received. She put it in the bag with more pennies she had gathered and said, “I want to give this to the people in Haiti.” I told her I thought it was a great idea , and it was her idea which made it even better. Today she added her five dollars to the jar. Every dollar makes a difference.
